Frequently asked questions

Here are some questions from our customers about our solar lighting services. If you can’t find what you’re looking for then please get in touch and someone from our team will be happy to answer any queries you may have.

How do solar streetlights work?

Solar streetlights work by using daylight to charge the battery cells built into the light unit. When night falls the lights automatically come on using energy charged into the batteries in the daytime. There is no requirement for any mains electricity to be wired to the lighting columns.

How do solar streetlights differ from mains feed streetlights?

Solar streetlights require no mains electricity, the saving on installation is vast as costly groundwork to lay mains cables is not required. Once installed there are no running costs associated with the solar units.

Do solar streetlights work in bad weather with no sunshine?

Yes, Vivid Solar streetlights work all year round even in the Northern Hemisphere. The light units have been designed and developed for the UK market and the large solar panels and high-capacity batteries enable the light units to work through the winter months. Vivid Solar streetlights have been tried and tested to work in the UK.

What is the expected lifespan of a solar streetlight?

The led units in the lights have a service life of 100,000 hours, the battery system has a warranty of 5 years and the solar panels 10 years.

Can I change and control the light unit myself?

Vivid Solar streetlights can be programmed and set to different parameters depending on your requirements. They can be set to come on at dusk for a period of time or to come on all night, there are many options. This can all be done via an app on your phone.

What cost savings can I expect to make between a solar and mains streetlight?

Solar streetlights can be installed in one step, no need to dig trenches, lay cables and backfill, so there is a considerable saving on the initial installation. There is no need to increase power capacity in the area either. Once installed, Vivid Solar streetlights have no running costs.

How does the light unit know when to turn on?

The light units are fitted with dusk-to-dawn sensors so they only operate when night falls.

Is there any maintenance required on solar streetlights?

We recommend that the solar panels are cleaned and battery units checked annually. We can offer a service agreement to carry this out.

Can solar streetlights be fitted anywhere?

One of the main advantages of solar streetlights is that they can be fitted anywhere, from roads to parks, farms to marinas; the list is endless. We offer a roof mount fitting and a surface mount unit.
